Mossman Filly Tops Gold Coast March Yearling Sale

A lovely filly by Mossman has topped the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale at $180,000.

The filly, presented as lot 363 by Oakwood Farm, was purchased by Group One winning trainer Mick Mair after healthy competition from around the ring.

“She’s a lovely filly,” Mair said. “I’ve had a lot of luck with the family and I’m hoping she can continue that.”

“Mossman is a leading sire and she has the looks and conformation to make it on the track,” the top horseman added.

The Mossman filly is the last foal from The Spear, a Brisbane winning Lion Hunter mare, who has already produced the group performer Fast Arrow.

She was one of three individual lots to sell for $100,000 or more – the other star filly of the day was the Hussonet-Morinda youngster from Jorson Farm who sold to David Vandyke for $120,000.

A colt by Real Saga from Lyndhurst Stud Farm sold for $100,000 to Norm Stephens earlier in the afternoon. Some eight yearlings at the auction sold for six figure prices.

The Gold Coast March Yearling Sale rounded out with a gross of over $8.3 million for 294 lots sold at an average price of $28,420 – just shy of last year’s record sale when the price soared almost 40 per cent.

“This sale until two years ago had grossed between $5 million and $6 million and that has grown to over $8 million last year and again this year,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said.

“It would seem that there is certainty in the Queensland product, however it is now time for breeders to evaluate their stock and look to upgrade for the future just as Jan Clark did a few years ago and the fruits of that investment have produced Capitalist.”

“To that end we congratulate Jan and the Daandine team on winning the Magic Millions-Golden Slipper double.”

“Special mention has to be made of our own James Dawson who worked tirelessly on this sale in accumulating a great buying bench and doing a huge amount behind the scenes,” Cox added.

The leading sire of the sale on average (for three or more sold) was Mossman ($99,167 for 3 sold) ahead of Sequalo ($45,308 for 13 sold) and Real Saga ($41,667 for 21 sold).

Oakwood Farm led the way as leading vendor (ranked by average – three or more sold) at $61,500 for 8 sold ahead of Jorson Farm at $56,875 for 4 sold. The leading vendor on total gross was Glenlogan Park with $1,256,500 given for 33 lots sold.

Golden Slipper winning breeder and vendor Daandine Stud sold all three lots offered at an average price of $42,667.
